A Sonar Elegy
A grieving pianist, battling his own sorrow and the looming fear of losing his connection to his late partner, a ballet dancer, must confront his emotional barriers through music in order to preserve their love and find peace before his past fades forever.
As part of my final project in the Video Art class at the University of Rochester, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a talented group of student filmmakers, led by Pirooz Kalayeh, a film director, screenwriter, and professor. The project culminated in the creation of a short film inspired by a poem I wrote titled "A Sonar Elegy."
The film tells the story of a pianist who uses his piano playing as a means to emotionally reconnect with the memory of his deceased partner, a ballet dancer. The narrative explores themes of love, loss, and memory, expressed through a blend of music, dance, and visual storytelling.
I co-screen wrote and co-directed the film, drawing inspiration from the poem's emotional core. Additionally, I designed the film's poster, using graphic design techniques to visually capture the essence of the story. The completed film was showcased in the class's final film exhibition, where it was presented alongside the work of other student filmmakers.
